Jakarta Pejompongan riot death investigation

Following the riots in the Pejompongan area of Central Jakarta on August 27, 2026, a 59-year-old mirror vendor, Bambang Setiyawan, died after being assaulted during clashes near the DPR RI Building. Witnesses reported the victim was dragged into the street and struck with sticks. While the victim was taken to Mintohardjo Hospital, he was later pronounced dead. The Polda Metro Jaya noted that the volatile security situation at the scene delayed his evacuation.

In the aftermath, authorities and analysts have called for a transparent investigation. Security analyst Bambang Rukminto urged the police to utilize CCTV footage and witness testimonies to provide progress reports quickly. Additionally, Abdullah, a member of Commission III of the DPR, emphasized that the investigation should extend beyond those physically committing violence to identify organizers.

As investigations continue, Polda Metro Jaya has denied claims circulating in videos suggesting police were escorting trucks carrying protesters armed with bamboo, clarifying that Brimob personnel were conducting patrols to monitor public order. Regarding surveillance, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung denied allegations that CCTV cameras were intentionally deactivated during the demonstrations, though he confirmed that some cameras were damaged by vandals and has ordered an investigation into those responsible.
