Jakarta authorities investigate aftermath of violent August 27 protests

Following violent protests near the DPR RI building on August 27, 2026, authorities and officials are addressing the aftermath in Jakarta. A civilian merchant, Bambang Setiawan, died during the unrest in the Pejompongan area. Member of Parliament Abdullah has called for a thorough investigation into the death to identify those responsible for the violence.

Polda Metro Jaya has denied circulating videos suggesting police were escorting trucks carrying protesters armed with bamboo. The police clarified that Brimob personnel were merely conducting patrols to monitor security and public order. Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung denied allegations that CCTV cameras were intentionally deactivated during the demonstrations, though he confirmed that some cameras were damaged by vandals and has ordered an investigation into the perpetrators.

In separate developments, approximately 35,000 PPPK and part-time PPPK workers are planning a mass gathering at the State Palace on September 7, 2026, to present four demands regarding their employment status and salary sources. Additionally, police have prepared security for various demonstrations scheduled in Central Jakarta on August 31.
