Indonesia celebrates 81st Independence Day with national ceremonies FAST-MOVING
Indonesia is celebrating its 81st Independence Day on August 17, 2026, with various national ceremonies and public festivities. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to serve as the Inspector of Ceremonies for the Proclamation Moment at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. In a notable shift, several government ministers will bypass the central Jakarta ceremonies to be present in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) to oversee earthquake recovery efforts following a magnitude 7.7 tremor.
In Jakarta, the government has implemented significant logistical measures, including the deployment of over 13,000 security personnel and the preparation of 21 parking locations to manage crowds at Monas and surrounding areas. Public transportation via Transjakarta has also undergone route modifications due to traffic diversions. A ‘Pesta Rakyat’ (People’s Party) at Monas will feature 600,000 free food portions provided by local MSMEs.
Weather forecasts from BMKG indicate partly cloudy skies across much of Jakarta and Yogyakarta, though mountainous regions in Central Java may see light rain. However, concerns remain regarding air quality in Jakarta, which has been recorded as unhealthy, and the potential for a prolonged dry season driven by an active El Nino phenomenon.
