Jakarta targets 100% waste management by 2028

Jakarta is implementing several initiatives to address its waste crisis. Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has set a goal for 100 percent waste management by 2028, supported by the planned construction of three waste-to-energy power plants (PLTSa) in Bantargebang, Tanjung Priok, and Sunter. Additionally, the government is expanding social protections, having registered 4,000 waste pickers in Bantargebang for BPJS Ketenagakerjaan insurance.

To combat illegal dumping, the DKI Jakarta provincial government has begun imposing administrative sanctions. PT Sinar Berdikari Cemerlang Idaman was fined 10 million IDR and received a written warning after being caught illegally dumping waste in Cilincing. The Governor warned that companies found dumping waste from the hotel, restaurant, and cafe (Horeka) sectors in unauthorized locations face heavier penalties, including business closure and public disclosure of their identities.

In the private sector, Bank Jakarta has launched a social responsibility program to build communal biodigesters in North Jakarta. These facilities, located at Rusunawa Rorotan and TPS 3R Rawa Badak Utara, are designed to process up to 500 kilograms of organic waste daily, converting it into biogas for renewable energy and organic fertilizer.
