Jake Whisenant, record-breaking climber, dies in Sierra Nevada accident

Record-breaking rock climber Jake Whisenant has died at age 30 following a climbing accident in California’s Sierra Nevada. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner confirmed that Whisenant died from blunt force trauma sustained during a fall. The death has been ruled accidental, and authorities noted that witnesses observed the fall, which reportedly caused instantaneous death. Toxicology results are pending.

Whisenant, a resident of Mammoth Lakes, was a prominent figure in the climbing community, particularly known for his speed ascents in Yosemite National Park. In October 2024, he and partner Brant Hysell set a significant speed record on El Capitan’s ‘Lurking Fear’ route, completing the climb in 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds, breaking a record that had stood for approximately two decades.

Friends and fellow climbers have shared tributes on social media. Bailee Moore, a lifelong friend, described the loss as “unimaginable,” noting that while the family is devastated, they find solace in the fact that he died pursuing his passion in the mountains.
