Salmonella outbreak linked to Mexican jalapeños triggers US recalls
A multistate Salmonella outbreak in the United States has been linked to fresh jalapeños supplied by Coast Citrus Distributors. The peppers, reportedly grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, have triggered widespread recalls of downstream products including salsa, guacamole, and pico de gallo. Major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods Market have pulled affected items from their shelves.
The FDA reports that at least 345 people have fallen ill, with 36 hospitalizations recorded across 27 states. While the most recent reported illness onset was July 20, 2026, health officials continue to monitor the situation.
In response to the alert, Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) conducted an investigation in Nuevo León. After analyzing ten samples of both raw materials and finished green jalapeño products, Cofepris reported that all results were negative for Salmonella, effectively ruling out the Nuevo León packaging facility as a source of the contamination.
