CJNG members charged with narcoterrorism in U.S. weapons plot
The U.S. Department of Justice has charged four members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) with narcoterrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons trafficking. The individuals—Edgar Alejandro López Velasco, Noé Díaz Jiménez, José Miguel Alvarado Morales, and Leobardo Gaxiola López—were arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2026.
According to federal prosecutors, the group engaged in an international scheme to exchange fentanyl and methamphetamine for high-powered European weaponry. In February 2026, members of the group allegedly negotiated the purchase of machine guns, grenade launchers, mortars, and ammunition in the Czech Republic. This arsenal was intended for use in Mexico against rival criminal groups, civilians, police, and military personnel.
López Velasco and Alvarado Morales are accused of acting as representatives for high-ranking CJNG members. Díaz Jiménez is identified as a fentanyl trafficker who operated a clandestine laboratory in Mexico, while Gaxiola López allegedly served as an intermediary for drugs and arms. Two of the suspects have already been extradited to the United States to face trial in Florida, where they face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
