US intensifies pressure and bounties on CJNG leadership

Overview

Since the July 23, 2026 sanctions targeting 55 individuals and firms, the United States has broadened its financial and legal offensive against the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Earlier actions included OFAC sanctions against a cross-border fuel-theft network, the introduction of the Stop Fueling Cartel Violence Act, and the designation of CJNG as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

Following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘El Mencho’, in a February 2026 military operation, U.S. intelligence identified Juan Carlos Valencia González, known as ‘El 03’ or ‘El Pelón’, as the new leader of the CJNG. On August 5, 2026, the U.S. Department of State increased the bounty for information leading to Valencia González’s capture to $25 million. This is part of a broader reward package exceeding $102 million targeting eight leaders and associates, including Audias Flores Silva, Gonzalo Mendoza Gaytán, and cartel accountant Griselda Margarita Arredondo Pinzón. Alongside these rewards, the U.S. has imposed visa restrictions on 65 individuals linked to the organization.

On August 10 and 11, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed indictments for narcoterrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons trafficking against four CJNG members: Edgar Alejandro López Velasco, Noé Díaz Jiménez, José Miguel Alvarado Morales, and Leobardo Gaxiola López. The suspects were arrested in the Czech Republic in June 2026 following an international scheme to exchange fentanyl and methamphetamine for high-powered European weaponry. By August 14, 2026, the Czech Republic confirmed the extradition of López Velasco and Alvarado Morales to Florida, while the other two remain in Czech custody pending extradition. If convicted, the defendants face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
