Jalisco faces $12 billion budget shortfall and major leadership reshuffle
Federal deputy Merilyn Gómez Pozos criticised the Jalisco state government for not spending roughly 12 billion pesos of its 2025 budget. She said the funds could have been used for security, public works, hydraulic infrastructure and sewage, noting that “Jalisco cuenta con un presupuesto histórico y cerca del 80 por ciento de los recursos provienen de la Federación”. Pozos also accused members of Movimiento Ciudadano of using public resources as political pressure.
The state announced a series of leadership changes effective 1 July 2026. Fernando Quesada Gómez will take over the Institute of State Pensions (IPEJAL) from Juan Partida Morales. Luis Enrique Barboza Niño replaces Mario López Pérez as head of the State Water Commission (CEA). In the health sector, Dr. Fernando Sánchez Zubieta succeeds Dr. Manuel Arias Novoa at the Jalisco Cancer Institute. Fernanda Robles Chavira assumes the role of Director of Youth, succeeding María Bravo Navarro. These appointments affect pension financing, water management, oncological care and youth programs across the state.
