Jalisco IEPC defines municipal council structures for 2027 elections
The Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Jalisco (IEPC) has approved the composition of municipal councils for the 2027 elections. This decision follows an electoral reform that utilizes population ranges based on the 2025 INEGI Intercensal Survey to determine the size of local governments.
In the southern region of Jalisco, Zapotlán el Grande will have 14 council positions, including the municipal presidency, one syndic, seven majority regidores, and five proportional representation members, due to its population of over 121,000. The remaining 16 localities in the area, which have fewer than 50,000 residents, will each consist of 11 council members: a mayor, one syndic, five majority regidores, and four proportional representation members.
The new regulations also include provisions for proportional representation to ensure democratic diversity and inclusion for priority groups. For instance, Tuxpan will reserve four spaces for members of indigenous communities.
