Jalisco launches 385 affordable housing lots as residents block nearby development

The Government of Jalisco began work on the El Porvenir subdivision in San Martín de Hidalgo, creating 385 serviced lots under the Programa de Suelo Urbano para la Vivienda. Each lot, 7 × 15 meters, will include water, drainage, electricity, sewage, and paved streets, and is priced at 180,000 pesos with a payment plan lasting up to ten years. The project, led by Instituto Jalisciense de la Vivienda (IJALVI) director Luis Guillermo Medrano Barba, municipal president Juana Ceballos Guzmán and UR+PA director Carlos Ochoa Fernández, aims to finish by July 2027 and to provide legal land titles that enable families to obtain construction loans.

In Zapopan’s Mirador de San Isidro, about 10‑20 neighbours have maintained a 24‑hour camp on a plot slated for the Legado Jalisco housing program, which plans 200 homes for state security personnel. The community staged a symbolic closure of the site, planting a tree to highlight concerns over increased traffic, water demand, pressure on public services and loss of green space. Residents argue the land was originally earmarked for parks and schools and that the development breaches the intended land‑use donation.
