Thousands of people across Pakistan engaged in widespread protests on Friday against rising fuel costs, soaring inflation, and the government's imposition of a new petroleum levy. Organized by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party, demonstrations and road blockades occurred in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi, and Abbottabad.

JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's administration, accusing successive governments of economic mismanagement. Rehman rejected the government's justification that the levy was necessary to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions, stating, “To hell with you and your IMF.” He further alleged that the government had collected 8 trillion Pakistani rupees through the petroleum levy, benefiting powerful interests rather than the public.

In response to the initial demonstrations, JI announced that scheduled sit-ins originally planned for August 9 were moved to August 16 to accommodate Independence Day celebrations. The party plans to hold simultaneous sit-ins in all four provinces, targeting the Punjab Chief Minister's residence in Lahore and Governor Houses in Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta.

While protesters disrupted major highways and urban traffic, government officials, including a spokesperson for the Sindh government, dismissed the actions as political point-scoring that inconveniences the public and disrupts emergency services.
