Overview

Following an initial increase in fuel prices in Pakistan that drove up transportation and airfares, nationwide protests erupted against rising costs and a new petroleum levy. By September 9, JI chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman indicated the party was open to serious negotiations regarding petroleum product prices, having submitted a list of recommendations to eliminate the levy. He argued the levy stems from poor economic policies rather than global market fluctuations. Ur Rehman warned that if the government fails to demonstrate seriousness, a new protest would be announced for the night of September 10, with a potential march on Islamabad to follow. He also called for legislative changes to increase the State Bank of Pakistan’s autonomy and criticized governance in Sindh, citing corruption and a lack of basic infrastructure.
