Overview

Following an initial increase in fuel prices in Pakistan that drove up transportation and airfares, nationwide protests erupted against rising costs and a new petroleum levy.

Led by the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party, thousands of demonstrators organized rallies in several major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi, and Abbottabad. To accommodate Independence Day celebrations, the JI has rescheduled its planned sit-ins from August 9 to August 16. These upcoming demonstrations are intended to take place simultaneously across all four provinces, specifically targeting the Punjab Chief Minister's residence in Lahore and Governor Houses in Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta.
