Jamaica Education Minister finalizes Teaching Council Bill
Education Minister Senator Dr. Dana Morris Dixon has announced that the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC) Bill is finalized and ready to be tabled in Parliament. The announcement was made during the 62nd Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) Annual General Conference in Trelawny. The Minister noted that she had engaged in dialogue with the JTA executive to allow the association additional time to review the legislation and submit their formal concerns.
Separately, the JTA has criticized the government regarding the slow recovery of schools damaged by Hurricane Melissa. Mark Malabver, the immediate past president of the JTA, expressed concerns that many schools will not be ready for the upcoming school term. He attributed the delays to management issues within the National Education Trust (NET) and a lack of contractor accountability, despite significant taxpayer funding allocated for repairs.
