Jamaica education reform and infrastructure updates

Jamaica is undergoing various educational reforms and infrastructure recovery efforts. The Education Transformation Oversight Committee reported that the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information has implemented 43% of the 365 recommendations from the Jamaica Education Transformation Commission report, an increase from 37% in the previous quarter. This progress includes over $3 billion spent on school repairs, with 32 schools completed and more than 200 undergoing reconstruction.

In legislative developments, Education Minister Senator Dr. Dana Morris Dixon announced that the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC) Bill has been finalized and is prepared for parliamentary tabling. While the Minister has engaged in dialogue with the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) to allow for legislative review, the JTA has raised concerns regarding the slow recovery of schools damaged by Hurricane Melissa. The association attributed repair delays to management issues within the National Education Trust and a lack of contractor accountability.
