Jamaica initiates reconstruction following Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica is undergoing extensive reconstruction efforts following the widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa. To support economic stabilization and rebuilding, the Jamaican government secured a US $6.7 billion international loan package led by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in December. However, with total damages estimated at $8.8 billion, the loan is insufficient to cover the full extent of the reconstruction.

Various organizations are providing localized relief and infrastructure support. The National Education Trust (NET) is restoring critical facilities, including classrooms, roofs, and laboratories, at several high schools and primary schools in Hanover and St James.

In St Elizabeth, the JN Foundation has invested $1.2 million into the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation’s Santa Cruz location to improve security fencing and rainwater harvesting systems. Additionally, the company Spaces has donated 250 mattresses to displaced families through its ‘Rebuilding with Heart’ initiative, supported by partners including Ashley Furniture Industries and the FLOW Foundation.
