Jamaica prepares for landmark 65th independence celebrations

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange announced that next year will mark Jamaica’s 65th anniversary of independence, the final year the national celebrations will be held at the National Stadium in Kingston before the venue undergoes a major redevelopment. A watch‑party will be offered at Independence Village for those unable to obtain tickets to the Grand Gala.

The season was launched with a National Thanksgiving Service in Kingston under the theme “United in Celebrating Resilience.” Grange highlighted a program that will include the 10th anniversary of Kingston’s UNESCO Creative City of Music designation, the 50th anniversary of women serving in the Jamaica Defence Force, the 60th Jamaica Festival Song Competition, and a Jamaica Reggae Icons award for Busy Signal and Wayne Wonder. The Grand Gala on August 6 will conclude with fireworks, a 1,000‑drone display and a police motorcycle parade.
