Jamaica tourism shows resilience with 2.34 million visitors

Jamaica is experiencing a recovery in its tourism sector, recording 2.34 million visitors and $2.5 billion in earnings through August 31. Despite the growth, the industry is still navigating the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which left approximately 30 percent of the island’s hotel room inventory out of service.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett noted that while visitor arrivals are 17 percent lower and revenue is 18 percent lower compared to the same period last year, the decline in arrivals is significantly smaller than the loss of hotel capacity. This suggests that underlying demand for travel to Jamaica is recovering more rapidly than the physical resort infrastructure can currently accommodate.
