James Gunn begins writing next DCU film amid Superman sequel progress

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has confirmed he is already writing his next film for the DC Universe (DCU). He revealed this via Threads, noting he began the script to stay occupied while waiting for the assembly cut of ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’ to be completed.

‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’ is the sequel to the 2025 ‘Superman’ film, starring David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult. The project has reached a significant post-production milestone with the completion of its assembly cut. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on July 9, 2027.

Gunn’s announcement comes amid broader shifts at Warner Bros. Discovery, including a merger involving Paramount and Skydance. Despite these corporate changes, Gunn and co-head Peter Safran will remain in their leadership roles at DC Studios. While the specific identity of Gunn’s next project remains undisclosed, it marks a continuous development phase for the expanding DCU slate.
