James Talarico faces concerns over Black voter support in Texas Senate race

Democrats are expressing concern regarding the candidacy of James Talarico, the party's nominee for the Texas Senate race. Party operatives and officials warn that Talarico may lack the necessary support from Black voters required to win in the traditionally Republican state.

Ashley Etienne, former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, noted that winning Texas as a Democrat necessitates overperforming with Black voters. She highlighted concerns regarding a lack of enthusiasm within the community and pointed out that $25 million in promised campaign investments have yet to be deployed. Etienne also noted the significant financial competition, citing Elon Musk’s intention to spend nearly $200 million on such races.

Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett, who lost the Senate primary to Talarico, also questioned whether the Black community is sufficiently energized by his candidacy. The 37-year-old state representative is currently attempting to build the coalition necessary for a statewide victory.
