James Talarico faces scrutiny over campaign messaging and legislative record

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico is facing scrutiny regarding his legislative record and campaign messaging in Texas. Critics, including commentator Sara Gonzales, allege that Talarico has modified his campaign website to remove progressive language and references to topics such as trans rights and Republican extremism in an attempt to appeal to a broader statewide electorate.

Political opponents are also highlighting Talarico’s past voting record on gender-related healthcare. Records show Talarico voted against Senate Bill 14, which prohibits physicians from performing certain gender-transition surgeries on minors, and against Senate Bill 1257, which would have required health plans to cover follow-up care for such procedures.

These debates coincide with a $10 million settlement involving Texas Children’s Hospital and Attorney General Ken Paxton. The settlement follows allegations that the hospital submitted false Medicaid claims for gender-transition treatments for minors. As part of the agreement, the hospital will establish a free, full-service detransition clinic.
