James Talarico faces scrutiny over religious and tax policies

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico is facing renewed scrutiny over resurfaced comments regarding his religious background and political views. In a 2023 podcast interview, Talarico discussed how his upbringing in a progressive Presbyterian church influenced his political path. He noted that his church had previously engaged in activism, including supporting LGBTQ rights and housing an undocumented family facing deportation by ICE.

Talarico also used the interview to criticize what he termed ‘Christo-fascism,’ accusing the religious right of leveraging Christianity for political power through policies such as school chaplain programs and abortion restrictions. These comments have been recirculated by Republican groups as he campaigns against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Separately, Talarico’s economic platform has drawn criticism from opponents. Critics have highlighted his proposals for tax increases, including a potential hike on payroll taxes for earnings above $400,000, which opponents argue would disproportionately impact small businesses and the self-employed.
