James Talarico faces scrutiny over tax vote and campaign strategy
Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico is facing scrutiny regarding both his past legislative record and his campaign's relationship with other party members. During a CBS News Texas interview, Talarico was questioned about his 2019 vote against a constitutional amendment that would have made the state's prohibition on individual income taxes permanent. Talarico defended his position, labeling the legislation ‘duplicative government overreach at its worst’ and arguing that an income tax was already barred under existing law.
Separately, Representative Jasmine Crockett addressed criticisms regarding her lack of involvement in Talarico's campaign. Crockett, who recently ran unsuccessfully for the party's Senate nomination, stated she has not recently discussed strategy with Talarico. She expressed trust in his team's plan and indicated she intends to focus her efforts on supporting Democratic candidates in local and state-level contests to build political infrastructure in Texas.
