Texas Senate race: Talarico leads Paxton in polls amid massive spending
The Texas Senate race between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton has intensified, marked by a massive influx of campaign spending and shifting polling data. A Marist poll indicates Talarico holds a six-point lead, with 50 percent of respondents supporting him compared to 44 percent for Paxton. Talarico shows significant strength among Gen Z and Millennial voters and maintains a double-digit lead among independent voters.
Republican efforts to secure the seat include a significant spending blitz. Trump-aligned groups have invested $10 million into the race, and Republican groups have booked over $100 million in advertising. Senator Ted Cruz has actively supported Paxton, citing the need to prevent a “radical left Democrat” from representing Texas. Conversely, Talarico has raised approximately $72 million, significantly outpacing Paxton’s $16.8 million, though he faces criticism regarding the timing of promised outreach to Black voters.
The campaign has also become a focal point for religious and social debates. Talarico’s religious views and the teachings of his pastor, Rev. Jim Rigby, have come under scrutiny from opponents. Additionally, the race has seen personal attacks, including nicknames and debates over Talarico’s past stances on sex education and transgender issues.
