James Talarico resurfaces after 13-day campaign absence

Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico has returned to the campaign trail following a 13-day absence from public view. Talarico was seen interacting with voters at the Austin City Limits music festival on Friday, marking his first in-person appearance since late September.

The candidate’s campaign attributed his disappearance to a bout of the flu, noting he had been working from home and attending meetings via Zoom. Talarico has dismissed online speculation regarding his whereabouts as “wild,” maintaining that he was simply recovering from illness.

However, the absence triggered significant political scrutiny. Republican opponent Ken Paxton’s campaign engaged in a “proof of life” campaign, including the distribution of missing person posters and the creation of a tip line. Additionally, independent journalists released audio of a phone call to the Lindner Center of Hope in Ohio, in which a staff member reportedly suggested Talarico had been discharged from the facility recently. Talarico’s campaign has denied claims that he was receiving mental health treatment.
