James Talarico targets big money and religious nationalism in Texas Senate race

Texas Senate candidate James Talarico has drawn attention for his religious views and his campaign strategy against Republican opponents. Talarico, a Democratic state representative and Presbyterian seminarian, previously delivered a sermon titled ‘God is not a Christian,’ in which he criticized efforts to transform America into a theocracy and described Christian nationalism as a ‘cancer on our religion.’ He has characterized God as being beyond human categories, once suggesting the concept was nonbinary.

In his campaign against opponent Ken Paxton, Talarico has focused on a grassroots strategy to counter the influence of billionaire donors like Elon Musk. Talarico argued that the political struggle is a matter of ‘top versus bottom’ rather than left versus right, claiming that wealthy individuals have rigged the economy against working people. He noted that his campaign has relied on small-dollar donations and a large volunteer base rather than corporate PACs to compete with big-money interests.
