James Talarico's Texas Senate Campaign Targets Drag Shows, Mexico Fans and Purged Voters
Democratic candidate James Talarico, a former Texas House member, drew attention in 2023 after stating Texas produces “some of the best drag queens in the nation” while opposing Senate Bill 12, which restricts drag performances. He voted present on the bill after language naming drag performers was removed.
In the current Senate race, Talarico has partnered with Beto O’Rourke’s Powered by People organization to conduct voter outreach aimed at drag‑show attendees, World Cup watch parties for Mexico supporters, and individuals previously purged from voter rolls. The strategy, revealed in a recorded Zoom call, seeks to mobilize voters the campaign views as likely Democratic supporters. Talarico will face Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November 3 general election.
