James Webb Finds Mature Galaxy Cluster and Complex Star System
The James Webb Space Telescope has observed the distant galaxy cluster XLSSC 122, dating back about 10.4 billion years. The cluster appears far more massive and evolved than current cosmological models predict, challenging theories of large‑scale structure formation. Its strong gravitational lensing also provides a natural magnifier for studying still more distant objects.
Combined observations from Webb and the Hubble Space Telescope show that the Milky Way’s inner‑bulge object Terzan 5 is not a typical globular cluster. Instead, it is a self‑enriched stellar system containing up to four distinct stellar populations with ages ranging from roughly 12 billion to 5 billion years. The findings offer new insight into the formation and evolution of the Galactic bulge.
