James Webb red-point mystery linked to forming globular clusters

Astronomers have proposed that the enigmatic "Small Red Points" detected by the James Webb Space Telescope are not vanished objects but the precursors of globular clusters. The new hypothesis suggests each point hosts an extremely massive star—between a thousand and ten thousand times the Sun’s mass—whose brief life produces the observed chemical signatures. Researchers liken the survival of these red points to dinosaurs giving rise to modern birds, arguing the objects evolve into the densely packed star clusters seen in galaxies today.

"These may not be a strange new JWST population unrelated to the universe we see," said study lead John Chisholm of the University of Texas at Austin. "Instead, the Small Red Points could persist beyond the primitive universe, evolving into something relatively familiar." The theory adds to ongoing debates about the early universe’s star formation and the origins of globular clusters.
