James Webb Space Telescope captures detailed images of the Lion Nebula
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured high-resolution infrared images of the Lion Nebula, officially known as NGC 2392, located in the constellation Gemini. Using the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), the telescope has provided a detailed view of this planetary nebula, which is approximately 4,200 to 5,000 light-years from Earth.
The nebula is formed by the remains of a dying, low-mass star that has shed its outer layers. At its center lies a white dwarf, which emits intense radiation that ionizes surrounding gas, creating an expanding bubble that resembles a lion’s face. The star’s energy also illuminates a surrounding dust shell, creating a structure that resembles a mane. Webb’s infrared capabilities allow astronomers to see through dust to reveal compact clumps of material and complex rings of gas that were less visible in previous observations, such as those made by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2000.
Astronomers note that the nebula is a dynamic, changing structure. The radiation from the central white dwarf continues to shape and destroy dust in its path. Experts estimate that the Lion Nebula will eventually disperse in approximately 10,000 years.
