James Webb Space Telescope captures detailed images of the Lion Nebula
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured high-precision infrared images of the planetary nebula NGC 2392, popularly known as the Lion Nebula due to its resemblance to a lion's face. Using the NIRCam and MIRI instruments, the telescope has revealed intricate details of gas and dust structures that were previously obscured in earlier observations, such as those made by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2000.
The nebula is the result of a low-mass star, similar to our Sun, reaching the end of its life cycle. As nuclear reactions cease, the star becomes unstable and expels its outer layers into space. At the center of the nebula lies a hot white dwarf, which emits intense radiation that ionizes the surrounding material and shapes the complex filaments and dust concentrations that form the nebula's characteristic appearance.
