James Webb Space Telescope reveals early black holes and supernova details

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is providing new insights into the early universe and stellar phenomena. Through the COSMOS-Web program, researchers have identified a population of objects known as ‘little red dots’ (LRDs). These compact, extremely red light sources appear to be the centers of very small galaxies hosting the birth of some of the cosmos' first supermassive black holes. Analysis suggests these objects may explain how black holes grew so rapidly when the universe was less than a billion years old.

Additionally, the JWST has monitored a Type Ia supernova, designated SN 2025rbs, located approximately 47 million light-years away. By observing the event over an 84-day period, astronomers were able to peer through expanding debris that becomes increasingly transparent over time. This allowed for the capture of unprecedented mid-infrared spectra, revealing the internal chemical composition and the layered organization of the exploding star as it transitioned into the nebular phase.
