James Webb Space Telescope reveals early supermassive black holes

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have identified evidence of massive black holes in the early universe, specifically focusing on mysterious compact objects known as ‘Little Red Dots’ (LRDs). These objects appear as small, intensely red dots in infrared observations and are believed to be supermassive black holes actively consuming surrounding material at extraordinary rates.

A research team led by Takumi Tanaka of the University of Tokyo’s Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe developed a new pixel-by-pixel image analysis method to overcome previous limitations where nearby objects appeared blurred together. Using this technique, researchers uncovered four pairs of dual LRDs dating back 12.5 to 12.8 billion years, suggesting these black holes may be on a collision course.

Further analysis indicates these LRDs are surrounded by extremely compact galaxies containing approximately one billion solar masses. The findings suggest that supermassive black holes may have formed before their host stars, as the faint host galaxies contribute only about 10% to 20% of the observed red light, implying a brilliant central source.
