James Webb Telescope Finds No Evidence of Dyson Spheres Around Candidate Stars

The James Webb Space Telescope examined two stars that had been highlighted as possible hosts for Dyson spheres, the hypothetical megastructures proposed by physicist Freeman Dyson to capture a star's energy. One of the targets was KIC 8462852, also known as Tabby’s Star, which had attracted attention after irregular dimming patterns were observed by the Kepler mission.

Infrared observations from JWST showed that the previously reported excess radiation did not originate from the stars themselves. Instead, the signals were traced to natural sources such as distant background galaxies, dust clouds, and stellar variability. Researchers including astrophysicist Olivia Curtis and project lead Erik Zackrisson noted that the findings align with conventional astrophysical models and do not support the existence of artificial megastructures.

The results reinforce the importance of ruling out natural explanations before invoking extraterrestrial technologies in the search for intelligent life, and they provide new data for ongoing SETI investigations.
