James Webb Telescope Study Links Little Red Dots to Early Star Clusters

Astronomers using data from the James Webb Space Telescope have identified numerous compact, bright objects called Little Red Dots (LRDs) that appeared between roughly 13.2 and 12.2 billion years ago. A study published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, led by John Chisholm of the University of Texas at Austin, proposes that these LRDs may be globular clusters in formation, each dominated by a super‑massive star.

A separate analysis, also in The Astrophysical Journal and led by Pierluigi Rinaldi, examines a lower‑redshift spiral galaxy nicknamed the “Saguaro”. The authors suggest the LRDs could instead represent a brief, highly active phase of supermassive black holes. Both papers note that LRDs were abundant a few hundred million years after the Big Bang and then rapidly declined, highlighting their potential role in early‑universe structure formation.
