James Webb Telescope Uncovers Unexpected Cosmic and Exoplanet Phenomena

Cosmologists using data from the James Webb Space Telescope identified a dense, linear gravitational anomaly—dubbed the “magical line”—in the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. The filament, about 1.2 million light‑years long, does not match predictions from standard cold‑dark‑matter models, prompting speculation about novel dark‑matter interactions or cosmic‑string signatures. Researchers quoted, “The precision of JWST data makes this anomaly impossible to ignore. Either we have a systematic error in our lens models, or we are observing an unexpected dark‑matter interaction.”

In a separate discovery, JWST observations of the exoplanet GJ504b revealed atmospheric salt clouds made of potassium chloride and zinc sulfide. These clouds, located near a pressure level of one bar, were essential to reconcile the planet’s spectrum, marking “the first time we find that salt clouds are crucial to explain an object’s spectrum.” The finding offers new insights into atmospheric chemistry of cooler giant exoplanets.
