Heavy rain alerts issued for Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed several districts of Kerala under red and orange alerts as a strong monsoon spell continues. A red alert covering seven districts – Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod – warns of extremely heavy rainfall, while orange alerts for eight districts – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod – signal very heavy rain. The department also noted that Typhoon Dolphin is indirectly strengthening the southwest monsoon, contributing to 226 mm of rain recorded in Kerala from 1‑5 August, far above the normal 90.6 mm.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the Meteorological Department forecasts intermittent rain over the next ten days, with heavy to very heavy showers expected between 9‑11 August in parts of the Jammu division. The agency warned that such rains could trigger flash floods and landslides. A flash‑flood incident in Udhampur district swept away a couple, with one body recovered; Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed the event with the district deputy commissioner. The Kerala High Court praised recent flood‑prevention measures in Kochi but urged continued vigilance.
