Typhoon Dolphin fuels heavy rains in Kerala and J&K

Overview

By early August 2026, Typhoon Dolphin, while remaining over the western Pacific, was amplifying the southwest monsoon across South and Southeast Asia. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange alerts for seven districts in Kerala and red alerts for seven districts, warning of rainfall more than double the monthly average and heightened landslide risk. The Philippines’ PAGASA noted that the storm’s circulation was absorbing the remnants of Tropical Depression Maymay, intensifying the southwest monsoon over western Luzon and the Visayas and prompting orange‑level warnings.

On 5 August, the IMD expanded its warnings, placing additional districts of Kerala under orange alerts and confirming that Dolphin’s indirect influence had produced 226 mm of rain in the state from 1‑5 August, far above the normal 90.6 mm. The agency also forecast intermittent heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir, where a flash‑flood in Udhampur swept away a couple, underscoring the broader impact of the monsoon surge linked to Dolphin.

Together, these reports illustrate how Typhoon Dolphin’s peripheral circulation continued to intensify monsoon activity, driving extreme precipitation, flood and landslide threats across Kerala, the Philippines, and now parts of northern India.
