Jammu and Kashmir Assembly autumn session begins amid political uproar

The autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly commenced in Srinagar on Monday, marked by intense political friction between the ruling National Conference-led coalition and opposition parties. The session opened with obituary references to three former ministers before devolving into heated exchanges.

Opposition BJP legislators staged protests regarding electricity tariff hikes, the demands of National Health Mission employees, and the regularisation of daily wagers. In response, members of the ruling alliance, including the National Conference, Congress, and CPI(M), countered by demanding the immediate restoration of the region's statehood.

The session, which is scheduled to run through September 30, is expected to address several contentious issues, including employment outsourcing, reservation policies, and infrastructure concerns. Security has been significantly tightened around the Assembly complex and the Civil Secretariat to ensure the smooth conduct of proceedings.
