Jammu Schools Closed After Heavy Rains, Government Orders Repairs and Relief

Heavy rains across the Jammu division since July 19 have caused landslides, flooding and crop damage, resulting in at least 27 deaths and six people missing in the districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda and Ramban. Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar chaired a review meeting and directed that any school building deemed unsafe or damaged be immediately locked and kept out of use until structural safety is confirmed. He ordered deputy commissioners to identify vulnerable schools, expedite repairs, and ensure power infrastructure is restored by the Jammu Power Development Corporation.

The commissioner also instructed chief agriculture officers to assess crop losses, accelerate ex‑gratia disbursements to affected families, and stock essential medicines and staff at health facilities. With further rain forecast for July 29‑30, authorities were told to pre‑position food grains, LPG cylinders and other daily necessities, and to strengthen flood‑protection measures and road clearance on a war‑footing basis.
