Jammu and Kashmir monsoon floods 2026

In early July 2026, heavy monsoon rains triggered cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides across Jammu and Kashmir, India. The worst impacts were recorded in the Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts, where at least 28 people were confirmed dead, six remained missing, and hundreds were displaced. Roads, bridges, power lines and drinking‑water schemes were destroyed, halting the Jammu‑Srinagar highway and the traditional Amarnath pilgrimage routes. Residents fled flooded villages, sought shelter in schools and panchayat buildings, and appealed for food, clean water and financial aid.

Following the disaster, authorities convened a review meeting on July 19. The divisional commissioner ordered the closure of any school deemed unsafe, expedited repairs, and directed power companies to restore electricity. Agriculture officers were tasked with assessing crop losses and accelerating ex‑gratia payments. With additional rain forecast for late July, officials pre‑positioned food grains, LPG cylinders and other essentials while strengthening flood‑protection measures and clearing roads on an urgent basis.
