Amarnath Yatra Halted as Rain-Closes Jammu‑Srinagar Highway
Heavy rainfall in the Udhampur and Ramban districts forced the closure of the 250‑km Jammu‑Srinagar National Highway (NH‑44) for a second consecutive day. The road surface became slushy, muddy and dangerously slippery, prompting authorities to halt all vehicular traffic and suspend the Amarnath Yatra convoy from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. Repair work, including slope widening and debris clearance, is underway on the landslide‑damaged Ladha‑Samroli stretch.
Because the highway remains closed, no fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed to travel toward the holy Amarnath cave. The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) shifted registration, token distribution, e‑KYC and RFID issuance facilities from the Tawi Riverfront to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, citing a decline in pilgrim arrivals. Since the pilgrimage began on July 3, about 450,000 devotees have visited the ice lingam shrine, and the Yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.
The weather also prompted the closure of government and private schools in Ramban and Doda districts, with classes moved online. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) continues intensive slope stabilisation and restoration work to reopen the route.
