Jan Böhmermann to end ‘ZDF Magazin Royale’ at year-end

Satirist Jan Böhmermann will end his show ‘ZDF Magazin Royale’ at the end of the year after more than six years and 187 episodes. The ZDF network confirmed that the current format will conclude, but stated they are in ‘good talks’ with Böhmermann regarding a potential new show concept. Böhmermann expressed a desire to ‘make another kind of show.’

Reports suggest the decision follows years of friction between the program and the broadcaster. One report indicates that a letter from media lawyer Christian Schertz to ZDF director Norbert Himmler may have served as a catalyst. Schertz had protested against an episode involving a person with a physical disability, arguing it was inconsistent with the public broadcaster's mandate to respect human dignity.

While the show has been highly decorated, receiving awards such as the Grimme Prize and the German Television Award, it has also faced criticism for its highly political and provocative nature. The broadcaster's program director, Nadine Bilke, expressed interest in continuing the collaboration through a new chapter.
