Changes to ZDF political satire programming

Overview

The German broadcaster ZDF is undergoing changes to its political satire programming. Satirist Jan Böhmermann will conclude his show, ‘ZDF Magazin Royale’, on December 18, 2026, after 187 episodes. The end of this format is expected to impact approximately 80 employees at the production company, with only a few positions expected to remain in 2027.

While the network confirmed the end of the current format, they noted they are in ‘good talks’ with Böhmermann regarding a potential new concept. In a recent appearance on the ‘Fest & Flauschig’ podcast, Böhmermann clarified that the decision to end the show was entirely his own and noted that the news surprised ZDF management, including Director Dr. Norbert Himmler. Böhmermann stated he wishes to pursue new creative concepts despite still enjoying the current show. Consequently, his planned 2027 tour with ‘Jan Böhmermann & Das Rundfunk Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld’ has been cancelled, and ticket holders have been advised to seek refunds.

In response to these shifts, ZDF announced a new political satire program titled ‘Journal Deluxe – mit Florian Schroeder’. Described as ‘anarchic, playful and accessible’, Schroeder has characterized the upcoming program as a ‘new satire color’ that is ‘more liberal’ and ‘does not wear blinkers’. The show is scheduled to debut on the ZDF Mediathek on October 29, with its first television broadcast following on November 3.

Ahead of the conclusion of ‘ZDF Magazin Royale’, the team is releasing a new half-hour satire titled ‘ZDF Magazin vor Ort’, scheduled to premiere on the ZDF streaming portal on September 25.
