Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana reports high account inactivity

Data released by the Ministry of Finance in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request reveals significant inactivity within the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). As of August 12, 2026, there were over 59.03 crore accounts under the scheme, holding a combined balance exceeding ₹3.15 lakh crore.

However, the report highlights challenges in sustained financial inclusion, noting that approximately 15.36 crore accounts are classified as inoperative and 5.72 crore accounts hold a zero balance. This indicates that nearly one in four accounts is not being actively utilized.

Demographically, the scheme shows high participation among women, who hold 32.89 crore accounts (including transgender account holders), compared to 26.14 crore accounts held by men.

Geographically, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest numbers across several metrics, including the most total Jan Dhan accounts (10.51 crore), the highest number of zero-balance accounts (95.92 lakh), and the most inoperative accounts (3.23 crore). Other states with high numbers of zero-balance and inoperative accounts include Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
