India Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana status

Overview

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), India’s national financial inclusion mission, marked 12 years of operation in August 2026. Since its 2014 launch, the program has expanded from 14.72 crore accounts in 2015 to over 59 crore accounts, with total deposits reaching approximately ₹3.17 lakh crore.

While the initiative has seen significant growth in engagement—with average deposits per account increasing 3.4-fold and over 55% of holders being women—recent data released by the Ministry of Finance in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request reveals challenges regarding account activity. The report indicates that approximately one in four accounts is currently inoperative. As of August 12, 2026, 5.72 crore accounts held a zero balance, and 15.36 crore were classified as inoperative.

Demographic data shows the accounts are distributed between 32.89 crore women (including transgender holders) and 26.14 crore men. Geographically, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest numbers across several categories, including the most total accounts (10.51 crore), the most inoperative accounts (3.23 crore), and the highest number of zero-balance accounts (95.92 lakh). Other states with significant zero-balance accounts include Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Maharashtra, while high levels of inoperative accounts were also recorded in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra.
