EU budget talks and Slovenian referendum disputes dominate regional news

In Slovenia, the State Election Commission (DVK) updated the results of recent referendums, including the vote on the RTV contribution. After including postal votes and correcting data entry errors, the margin for opponents of abolishing the RTV fee increased, with the difference nearly doubling. In response to the results, Prime Minister Janez Janša suggested potential legal challenges or criminal complaints against the DVK, a move that DVK officials stated threatens the independence of democratic institutions.

On the European stage, negotiations continue regarding the European Union's multiannual financial framework for 2028–2034, valued at nearly two trillion euros. EU leaders have tasked European Council President António Costa with leading the negotiations to reach an agreement by the end of the year.

Member states remain divided between a group of nations seeking budget cuts and a group of cohesion-friendly countries, including Slovenia, Croatia, and Poland, which aim to protect funds for regional development, agriculture, and cohesion. The Irish Presidency has proposed a compromise to reduce the total budget by approximately 141 billion euros, though discussions regarding new EU-level revenue sources remain ongoing.
