Japan Air Self-Defense Force Global Hawk crashes off Tottori coast

A Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Global Hawk (RQ-4B) unmanned reconnaissance aircraft crashed in the Sea of Japan off the coast of Tottori Prefecture on September 15. Following the loss of communication, search operations have been underway to locate the aircraft.

On September 19, debris identified as parts of the Global Hawk was found washed ashore near Aoya Town, Tottori. In response, the Self-Defense Forces have expanded their search to include the coastline between Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture. Personnel are utilizing helicopters, drones, and ground patrols to locate further wreckage. Authorities have advised local residents not to touch any discovered debris and to report findings to the Miho Base.

The crash impacts Japan's surveillance capabilities, as the nation operates only three of these aircraft. Experts note that the loss of one unit significantly disrupts the standard operational rotation of one aircraft on mission, one on standby, and one undergoing maintenance.
