Japan ASDF Global Hawk aircraft loss
Overview
On September 15, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) lost contact with an RQ-4B Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. The drone, stationed at Misawa Air Base, disappeared from radar while flying over international waters approximately 50 kilometers north of Tottori Prefecture. Initial search and rescue operations involved ASDF aircraft and Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels, with some debris discovered floating at sea.
By September 19, debris identified as parts of the aircraft was found washed ashore near Aoya Town, Tottori. In response, the Self-Defense Forces expanded their search area to include the coastline between Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture, utilizing helicopters, drones, and ground patrols.
The loss of the aircraft, valued at approximately $110 million, impacts Japan’s surveillance capabilities. Because the nation operates only three such units, experts indicate the crash significantly disrupts the standard operational rotation of one aircraft on mission, one on standby, and one undergoing maintenance.
On October 2, the ASDF commenced recovery operations after locating what appears to be the drone’s fuselage on the seabed at a depth of 200 to 300 meters. A mother ship has deployed a remotely operated underwater vehicle to pinpoint the location and retrieve debris, with the salvage of larger components expected later in October. Japanese defense officials are investigating the cause of the crash in coordination with the manufacturer, Northrop Grumman, and the U.S. military; officials stated there is currently no indication of foul play.
