Japan and ICC challenge U.S. sanctions on international court
Tensions are rising between the United States and Japan following U.S. decisions to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). The U.S. has targeted ICC President Tomoko Akane, judges, and the institution itself, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio vowing to dismantle the court.
In response, the Presidency of the Assembly of States Parties to the ICC issued a statement demanding the immediate withdrawal of these sanctions, describing them as an “unprecedented and coercive measure” and a “direct challenge to international judicial institutions.” The Presidency, which includes representatives from 21 countries including Japan, called on the international community to defend the court.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has publicly expressed regret over the U.S. policy, stating that the sanctions are incompatible with Japan’s support for the international rule of law. This stance marks a significant diplomatic friction point with the Trump administration, as Takaichi has also aligned with several European nations in opposing the U.S. actions.
